The future of biotechnology.

Fingernails could eventually be used to carry personal financial information. Laser inscription allows data to be stored for up to six months during the natural life of the nail.
Yoshio Hayasaki of the University of Tokushima and colleagues say a single fingernail could accommodate something like 800 kilobytes of data. That won't provide room for a high-resolution photo, but would be enough to store basic identification information.

I don't know which one-liner to pick:
Don't chew your nails- you could destroy your credit rating.
Will thieves be picking clippings out of our garbage instead of credit card applications?
She's trying to polish her credit record.
And it is commonly known that toenails grow more slowly than their finger counterparts, so perhaps that will be a longer-lasting option for financial innovators. Just please don't pay at the table.

I love the writing. Especially the one at the end about being in the elevator. Profound but true.

Sounds to me to be a real close example of the mark of the beast. If you believe in that sort of thing.

I can't wait 'til I can hack my credit rating with a magnifying glass and a pair of nail clippers. OK, now that that's done, not so much a comment on this particular post, but this is the first interesting blog that dastardly "next blog" button has given me. Thanks for restoring what little faith I may have ever had about this particular vehicle of self expression. Good show.

Somewhere, someone will be forced to carry out an anarchistic revolt against the future's nail-dominated society by carefully removing each hardened slice of karatine from the top of their fingertips.

Also, fake nails will have much more important functions.

I must have been put on the "Next Blog" list today. Welcome to the first-timers! I hope you stick around.

And Dot, can you imagine the violent crime it would inspire?

Hey, hey, hey, thanks for my "first-nice-comment-from-somebody-who-I-don't-know-personally." You get an award by the same name as far as I'm concerned.

When I was in 8th grade a tech guy came to our school to tell us that in the future all of our data would be accessible by scanning the back of our eyeballs. He said it was more individually distinct than finger prints (but he didn't mention how it compared to fingernails).

Jen- It took me a second, but I got the Napoleon reference. Heh heh.

Chuck- I hope that he meant the retina and not the actual back of our eyeballs! Ouch. How would they get the scanner back there? I'm still waiting to move up to one of those mini credit cards.

Ah yes.... Retina scans.... They are more distinct from fingerprints.

Of course, this once again proves that everything I've ever needed to know in & about life I've learned from watching Star Trek in its various forms....
